There are things that we utilise to make things right. Technology is one such element in human life that has the capability to make things right. But my concern is not technology but how we use it. I am in the favour of devising techs for enhancing and enriching the standard of education. To make learning simple, relevant, meaningful and practical. Although there are several technologies but are these being properly applied to improve education exercises in the classroom? The answer is- only a few use technology in classroom while the majority of the teachers still ignore it. But what could be the reason for not utilising the advanced digital tools?
Technology needed but….
In a survey of teachers conducted in the US in December 2015 has presented some amazing facts. Two third of the teachers said that they want to include technology but they would require further training. On the other hand, overall 90% said for the success of classroom technology is essential. Imagine, when the scenario is that unusual in the most developed part of the world what could be the situation in the countries where to forget about technology even regular classroom facilities are not present. Education technology is designed to deliver improved and complex learning in most simpler manner.
Installation of techs & training
Why experts give so much importance on installing digital technology in classroom? Integration of technology in the classroom could help teachers in many ways. Teachers can make educational activities interesting with video and graphic contents. There is apps and software which allows to track the attendance and even sitting updates of the students. Moreover, many techs allow teachers to provide real-time reports on the performance of the children directly to the parents. And most importantly this tech reduce the additional burden from teachers. With techs, instructors can provide next classroom learning schedule, homework and assignments, notify exam and so on. Hence, going through all the aspects technology becomes impeccable in the modern education. And that’s why schools and other institutes need to adopt techs which may be useful for them and their students.
Now the next part is -Training. The survey conducted in the US is the eye-opener for all of us.
Technology can be there what it’s of no use if people don’t know how to use it. Thus, teachers should be provided with adequate training to use technologies that will help to facilitate learning in more advanced manner. The better the teacher are trained the better the techs will be put to use. So why not equip teachers with the robust sound of techs for enhancing the classroom learning?
Make it right
Anyway in future classrooms will be digitised. The tone has to set right from this time. The foundation laid today will actually pay off in the future the development of all from teachers, students to schools and institutes. Besides, with the help of technology, we can engage poor and undeserved children to take education. Since technology has significant role to play in delivering education we cannot risk to avoid it.

The duties and responsibilities of a teacher is now not limited with the chalk and blackboard. Alike the management students, even they need to think of creative ideas and perform tasks which were once considered beyond the responsibilities.
Technology has made us a slave to its benefits. So education cannot stay far away from it.
Now-a-days teachers need to be tech geeks in order to handle educational apps, online discussion forums and even social media conversations.
Advent Of Technology In Education
As far as educational apps have created a new outlook towards education so do the teachers had to change their approach while dealing with assignments and examination modules. Everything is going online, so is the study and learning modules. Online classroom sections are been popularised as it connects the students and the teachers without been physically present in the classroom. Students link to their subject teachers and conduct their assignments and exams online. Though it has eased out the tasks of the teachers to a certain extent but also indicate rigorous tech knowledge to handle and operate those apps fluently.
Recently the University of Delaware has planned to host its third annual UD Educational Technology Conference (UDETC) on March 5, to help pre-K-20 educators develop a better understanding of the alternatives now available. The full-day conference will aim to acknowledge the teachers with technology experience to the extent of possibilities and provide the more technology – savvy users opportunities to explore newer, cutting edge technologies.
Participants in this conference will gain in hand experience in the following topics:
Coordinate Office 365 across multiple devices
Conduct online assessments
Create digital content for the classroom; and
An imperative response has been noted from the teachers’ community. Cindy Luce, who teaches at St. John the Beloved School in Wilmington said, “As educational technology becomes a must-have instead of a nice-to-have, UD’s Ed Tech Conference provided a much-needed opportunity for professionals to learn from each other and stay on top of the latest trends.”
The Change For Good
It is good to see the involvement of the teachers learn more about technology and the newer technologies that the development team has to offer. Going online simplifies a lot of burdens of the teachers and even learn newer stuffs so that they can offer it to their students immediately. Social discussion forums allow to exchange knowledge and latest educational updates not only among the students of same class but also of different schools. Altogether an education revolution will about to be created.

Among the many grave challenges that Nigeria is facing currently, preparing the young generation to add value to the national economy in the future seems to be the hardest. Since that last few years, the nation has been steeped in corruption, terrorist attacks, political uncertainty, high unemployment rates and poor educational opportunities. This creates a huge pressure not only on the society but also on the youths.
Challenges For Nigerian Youths
With constantly growing rate of unemployment, it is believed that around 75 per cent of Nigerian youths are ill-equipped to cope the international job market, recession and the global economy. This raises various other issues such as easy access to financial support for start-ups along with other challenges in development. Many experts and youth forums highlight the necessity of quality education as well as practical strategies that will enable young people to deal with specific needs and prepare them to deal with challenges in future. Mass poverty is one of the most menacing challenges in Nigeria and represents a big fraction of the overall national population. Most Nigerian youths face much difficulty in getting a job and starting their careers or even their own business.
Unemployment: The Biggest Challenge
Unemployment is a basic reality for almost all youths, which is even higher than adult unemployment rate. This clearly denotes an improper utilisation of our human capital resources, especially of the Nigerian youth. This also goes to show that most employers do not trust the skills, knowledge and experience of fresh graduates. Young people who get the chance to attend school education are compelled to stay in education for a longer duration by pursuing a masters degree programme. Employment opportunities are becoming more scarce with decreasing salaries and unstable careers.
Those youths who are unable to access higher education opportunities, tend to move away from the school system due to various factors like financial struggles, political disturbances etc. These people are often overlooked by the corporate sector and receive only menial jobs with minimal pay, mostly due to lack of skill and experience. According to statistics, more than 3 million youths in the state of Lagos are still unemployed. With over 2 million people under skilled for employment. Moreover, numerous others are forced to work in temporary jobs are usually taken advantage of by employment agencies with minimal pay and no benefits. Due to all these problems, youths in Nigeria are taking interest in unproductive activities like drug abuse, internet fraud, violent behavior, prostitution, criminal activities, repeated riots etc.
Offering Quality Education
A reputed English Professor said “The biggest problem Nigeria has with empowering her youth is the fact that they throw temporal solutions to permanent problem and never address issues from the grassroots”.
In the past few years, many NGOs have come forward with excellent processes, strategies and concepts that help the youth to access quality higher education and help them to develop skills that are essential for the workplace. The organisations have a clear understanding of the challenges faced by the Nigerian youth and know how these can be dealt with. Hence, they develop targeted solutions that will enable our youths to face various challenges and uncertainties and move closer towards economic independence.

In Africa, there was a time when obtaining quality education was considered to be a challenge owing to a lot of reasons. Poor infrastructure, weak economy and ongoing political disturbances were three major reasons that deprived a lot of students from attaining their career goals. Things changed over time and plenty of technological developments gradually started bringing modifications in the education system.
ODel – A promise to Africa
The introduction of ODeL (Open, distance and e-learning) in Africa is one of those incredible innovations that has eliminated the chances of not only unemployment but also gross inequalities in Africa. Moreover, the emerging trends of higher education from the global viewpoint have actually stood responsible for realising the importance of initiating ODeL in Africa. The Massive Open Online Courses were another noteworthy contribution on behalf of the digital education providers that brought a new meaning to online learners living in remote corners.
The year was 2008 when MOOCs attained global recognition and even questioned the traditional procedures of obtaining education. Although the process of delivering courses through web was first initiated a couple of decades back, the consequences were actually realised and had a global impact in the 21st century only.
African post-secondary education standards in question
Despite the increasing popularity of studying courses online, many questions were raised:
– Will schools, colleges and universities in Africa will be able to afford the cost of introducing new learning technologies?
– Will post-secondary institutions be able to cope with the prevalent challenges?
– Are higher education institutions in the developed nations differ a lot in comparison to those located in the developing nations?
Well, experts say that it is not easy for institutions in the developing countries to cope with institutions in the developed ones. In Africa, for instance, what is important is the crucial need to enhance access to diverse opportunities, especially for students pursuing postsecondary education.
More developments are still to be made
Although African countries like Nigeria has made massive developments in digital education by bringing over 4 million internet users over a short time span, the rest of the nations need to gear up. However, it’s true that there have been recent developments in post-secondary education that has eliminated a lot of misconceptions in regard to distance learning and electronic learning.
Despite, this is not all that speaks about distance learning. Since Africa has been promised to enjoy the benefits of ODeL, some serious issues still need to be rectified as soon as possible. For instance:
- Assuring the quality of study materials
- Ensuring accreditation for online learners
- Checking credit transfers
- Making employers recognise the importance of awards
- Dealing issues in regard to cross-border provision
Well, reality says that distance learning has a lot of advantages. However, it’s also true that in order to realise the advantages associated with distance learning, necessary modifications must be made. Although a huge number of new age learners are now keen to learn online in Africa, they must also be promised considerable academic support by their respective online learning institutions. So, a quality check is extremely crucial which will only be able to solve societal crises and at the same time fulfil career objectives of individuals living in remote corners.
